Our campground is located on the family home, of owner Murray Reed. Murray's parents, George & Hazel Reed, purchased that property in 1948 from a Mr. Burdon. Murray was born in 1947. The house needed lots of repair and George, establishing his farm, did not have a lot of money. George & Hazel raised their four children there. George working at various jobs in addition to farming his land, and eventually Hazel as a school teacher. By 1980 when Murray himself became a Dad, he started camping on George & Hazel's doorstep with his young family of two boys. It eventually became a yearly vacation for Murray & Lorraine. They eventually nestled themselves down by the river, separated from George & Hazel's big farm house by acres of fields which George farmed or set out in vegetable gardens. Eventually, when the farm (now a non working farm) was offered to Murray, (his Dad passed away in 1992) it became evident that the large field that separated our little camping spot from the big farm house could be used to share our camping experience. And thus one rental camper was set up, then another, then we started acquiring seasonals. The first one rental was set up in 1994 and we have grown from that to what we are today. Hazel just passed away in 2004, and up to then she was a big part of our camping family. She was very interested in people and they enjoyed visiting with her.

However, the little piece of land that George Reed (1910– 1994) and Hazel Chetwood Creighton (July 6, 1910 – October 22, 2004), called home, which is now Riverside Rentals, had a beginning way back in history. As it intrigues me, I’d like to take you back in time, if you will close your eyes and ‘see’ the Indians canoeing right in front of you, on the river where your children were just playing a few minutes ago, and coming ashore to greet the new settlers to this unknown land… Can you see it all?

All Our Born Days
Doris Calder has captured the Kingston Peninsula
with some stories of life in days gone by

“Doris Calder, a life long resident of the Kingston Peninsula, born at Grey’s Mills, has a deep affection for the Kingston Peninsula and its people. In preparation for writing her book, ("All Our Born Days" - A Lively History of New Brunswick's Kingston Peninsula - by Doris Calder), Doris spent several years researching written material, interviewing older residents and visiting sites that were important to the early settlers. Her book is the story of the Kingston Peninsula - its hills, forests, fields and the waters that surround it, as well as the people who have lived on the Peninsula - Malecites, Acadians, early English-speaking settlers, Loyalists and their descendants, Irish immigrants and their offspring, and others who came to stay. Many interesting stories of life in the twenty-mile peninsula that is tucked in between the Saint John and Kennebecasis Rivers can be found in “All Our Born Days”.”
A few excerpts of “All Our Born Days”
